How to Care for Dry Skin
Dry skin is generally a problem that can be put down to a few main causes, and can be solved by lifestyle changes.
CAUSES:
1: Not correct nutrition to support skin
2: Dehydration
3: Products and environments disturbs skin’s delicate balance and strips skin of protective film
4: Medication
5: Underlying medical condition
FIXES:
1: Correct nutrition. Do not be afraid of fats.
• Make sure you get enough healthy fats: butter (YES!), extra virgin cold pressed olive oil, Omega 3 fish oils (Krill oil is very good as it is low in food chain so cleaner). Flax oil if vegetarian, but please note not all people are able to make conversion.
• Eat the rainbow: i.e. eat from as many different types of foods, with as many different colours as possible every day. Variety is key and provides lots of anti-oxidants!
• Avoid at all cost: Margarine, hydrogenated fats, fried vegetable oils.
• Get the right nutrients. Vitamin A (Butter), Vitamin E (avocado) and Zinc are especially important for the skin. (Many people are deficient in zinc; white flecks on nails indicate this).
• Take a multivitamin/mineral to cover bases.
• Eat good quality protein. Fish, meat. (Organic if poss.)
• Avoid coffee, sugar, tobacco, alcohol
• Stop smoking
• Get enough sleep
• Get some exercise.
• Get enough liquids.
• Avoid burnt/BBQ foods.
2: Products and Environment: Stop using harsh products. Use gentle products that will support your skin. Read the label. Wash less. Get a water softener, harsh water can dry your skin. Exfoliate. Turn down the central heating (also good for climate…). Try not to use air conditioning. Get fresh air.
3: Medication: See your doctor and discuss whether you can do anything about this. Maybe your dose can come down, or your medication can be changed. It is even more important to support your skin with nutrition and supplements as above.
4: Medical Condition: A thyroid problem can be a cause of dry skin, get it checked. Other hormonal problems can cause dry skin, so get your hormones checked out. Make sure your digestive system is working well. Support it if necessary. (Digestive aids: Probiotics, enzymes, apple cider vinegar).
