Ageing and Skin
We all know that you cannot prevent ageing. But – we can slow down some of the processes and encourage cell renewal. Rosy, healthy skin looks better, no matter your age, and this is achievable for all.
Please also check my natural skincare blog for an alternative view of ageing/skin!
INTERNAL CAUSES OF AGEING OF SKIN:
1: Skin becomes thinner
2: Blood flow slows
3: Collagen fibres stiffen/break. Elastin fibres lose elasticity and thicken into clumps hence wrinkles.
4: Less collagen and elastin production
5: Less immune protection
6: Sebaceous glands reduce in size, dryer skin
7: Sweat production reduces
EXTERNAL CAUSES OF AGEING OF SKIN:
1: Sun damage
2: Smoking, poor diet, pollution
Ageing is not preventable!!! (Do we really want it to be?) But some causes of skin ageing are, and others can be modified and delayed.
FIXES: We want to slow the breakdown and stimulate repair. A healthy diet is CRUCIAL to provide all nutrients needed for skin repair.
1: Avoid excessive sunlight. But do make sure you get enough! It is essential for health.
2: Stop smoking, cut alcohol, avoid pollution, toxic chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, radiation.
3: Exercise. Walk, run, pump those muscles. Make it fun!
4: Sleep – get enough. Research suggests sleep before midnight is important. Go to bed before 10 pm.
5: Eat healthily. A Stone Age Diet is perfect. See Dr Myhill’s website for more info.
6: Eat a rainbow diet; eat lots of fruit, nuts, seeds and veg.
7: Use gentle skincare products that have anti-ageing actions. Many essential oils can provide this. Oil based products are good, as they do not contribute to removing the skin’s protective layers, and will help replace some of the oils that the sebaceous glands are not longer producing. (All of our moisturisers are oil based!)
8: Drink enough liquids.
9: Take supplements to boost you body’s ability to repair. Vit B12 is important as can be hard to absorb with age, Co enzyme Q10, Carnitine, Vitamin B3. Antioxidants may help (anthocyanadins), as well as EFA’s, glucosamine. (Magnesium, Zinc, Vitamin C and E).
10: Follow “Dr Myhill’s I want to live to 100” plan.
11: Try Facial Exercises! (And please do let me know how you get on!)
